Old Photo of Old Brown County Jail
Brownwood in Brown County, Texas served as a safe haven and stronghold for the Knights of the Golden Circle after the Civil War. You can see their influence in the construction of this jail as it resembles a castle which is what the KGC called their lodges. This is the historic old Brown County Jail building in Brownwood, Texas. Construction was completed in 1903 but it was built over the entrance to a Knights of the Golden Circle tunnel. The underground room that contains a tunnel entrance that goes underneath Main Street in Downtown Brownwood was left over from an old bottling company that was on the site earlier. The old Brown County Jail building now houses the Brown County Museum of History and was shown in America Unearthed: Lincoln's Secret Assassins.
